Solange , Afro fashion icon ?

18:54

I have to say that Solange have been in my fashion radar for quite some time now. Her recent change of style has really impressed me and made me look twice when I see her name in magazines.
Quite a lot has already been said about her, her hair and her relation with a very famous sister. I wouldn't dare go into a comparison between her and "Queen B" ! She is totally different from her obviously very talented and bootylicious older sibling, and that is exactly why I really like her !

Everything about  her seems so genuine and refreshing.
There is also a very classy and retro side to her style that remind me of the singer of the 50's and 60's like Diana Ross.

She has been described by the Independent newspaper as "a modern Afro-bearing style icon" and I would have to agree with that. What do you think ?

We can definitely see the affinity between Solange and Africa. She doesn't seem to be in disguise or dressed " as african are dressed" but she really has understood what African fashion is about and we can only praise her for that.
To be honest I don't really know how and when she fell in love with the continent but we can only rejoice the fact that it puts Africa and its artistic heritage into the spotlights. She might have find inspirations during her travels in South Africa or Rwanda, where she was earlier this year with her young son .

She even wrote on twitter:
"I LEFT A PIECE OF MY HEART IN RWANDA. KIGALI…..FILLED WITH SUCH BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING PEOPLE… (AND MIGHT I ADD, INSANELY STYLISH)
I WILL BE BACK, THAT'S FOR SURE."

In 2011 she recorded a track with an accompanying music video to benefit RAIN, The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation’s Replenish Africa Initiative and help raise money and awareness for the global water crisis in countries such Cameroon, Kenya and Rwanda.

The songstress and fashionista has decided this year to proudly reveal the source of her exotic and vibrant style, on the the November cover of ELLE South Africa.

The 26-year-old singer wore different local designers for the  shoot at the Roodebloem Studios in Cape Town. on the cover we can admire the  Loin Cloth & Ashes shorts, a Tart top and Pichulik rope bracelets that she picked herself during the shoot.
The cover really reflect how outgoing and bubbly she appears to be. I really like the different textures and colours and the yellow background really warms the whole picture up.

Here are some more behind the scene pictures:

I wasn't really familiar with  her music before but I'll definitely take a closer look to all her next videos.
the video "Losing You" is stylish with a retro feel and you don't often get to see the colourful "sapologues" or "sapeurs" in action.
( I might do a special post about the sapologie philosophy and history very soon ....)

Have a look and enjoy ...

Peace !
